DoT i.e. Department of Telecommunications has taken major action and blacklisted more than 1 lakh fake SMS templates. This major action of the Telecom Department has been taken under the new rules of fake messages and unsolicited communication brought by TRAI in October. Apart from this, the Department of Telecommunications has also warned mobile users to report fake SMS on Sanchar Sathi portal. The Department of Telecommunications has shared information about the action taken on message templates through its X handle.

Warning to mobile users

DoT has warned mobile users in its post that no bank or government agency asks for your personal information through SMS. If you receive any such SMS, immediately report it on Sanchar Saathi portal. More than 1 lakh such message templates have been blacklisted. In its post, DoT has shared a screenshot of a fake SMS coming in the name of SBI Bank, so that users can ignore such messages.

Preparation to stop fake messages and calls

In view of the increasing incidents of fraud, the Telecom Regulator and the Department of Telecommunications have issued new guidelines regarding fake calls and messages, in which telecom operators have been instructed to block such calls and messages at the network level. Apart from this, all telemarketing entities have been asked to register themselves in the whitelist, so that the messages sent by them can be received by the users. Not only this, TRAI has also implemented the rule of message traceability, under which it can be known from where the message has originated.

Recently, TRAI has imposed a fine of crores of rupees on all the telecom operators for being unable to stop fake calls. The telecom regulator has so far imposed a fine of Rs 142 crore on telecom companies. Also, instructions have been issued to the Department of Telecommunications to pay the amount of this fine from the bank guarantees of these companies.
