This visit of Jimmy Carter reduced the tension between the two countries due to the India-Pakistan war in 1971 and India’s nuclear test in 1974. According to BBC, Carter’s mother Lillian had lived in India for several months. When Carter came to India, he also visited Daulatpur Nasirabad, a village in Gurugram in Haryana. Carter wanted India not to acquire nuclear weapons In the year 1974, India conducted the first nuclear test in Pokhran, Rajasthan without anyone knowing. Due to which America got angry. Due to this, many types of restrictions were also imposed on India. According to the report of India Today, when Jimmy Carter came to India in 1978, he was confident that he would get India to sign the NPT i.e. Non-Proliferation Treaty and forever close the way for us to acquire nuclear weapons. However this could not happen.

The then Prime Minister Morarji Desai very cleverly put three conditions before him. He said that India will sign the NPT if all the nuclear powers of the world also do so. In the second condition he said that no one will make nuclear weapons. In the third condition, he said that if all the countries possessing nuclear weapons destroy them, then India too will never conduct any nuclear test.
