Manmohan Singh’s relationship with Gah village of Pakistan
There is a wave of mourning across India due to the demise of the country’s former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. At the same time, the people of Gah village of Chakwal district of Punjab province of Pakistan are also deeply saddened by the demise of former Indian PM Manmohan Singh. The people of the village say that we feel as if a member of our family has passed away, he has gone away from us. Altaf Hussain, a resident of Gah village, told PTI that a group of local people held a condolence meeting to express grief over the demise of village boy Manmohan Singh. Hussain is a teacher in the same school in Gah village where Manmohan Singh studied till class 4.
What is Manmohan Singh’s relation with Gah village?
Let us tell you that Manmohan Singh’s father Gurmukh Singh was a textile businessman and his mother Amrit Kaur was a housewife. Manmohan Singh’s childhood was spent in Gah village of Pakistan and his friends used to call him ‘Mohana’. Pakistan’s Gah village is located about 100 km south-west of the capital Islamabad and was part of Jhelum district at the time of Manmohan Singh’s birth but was incorporated into Chakwal district in 1986.
Manmohan Singh received his primary education from the most prestigious school of Gah village. Even today his admission number in the school register is 187, and the date of admission is recorded as 17 April, 1937 and his date of birth is recorded as 4 February, 1932 and his caste as ‘Kohli’.

The teacher of the school in Gah village where Manmohan studied said, “Dr. Manmohan Singh could not visit Gah during his lifetime, but now that he is no more, we want someone from his family to visit this village. Some of Singh’s classmates, now deceased, had expressed happiness when he became prime minister in 2004. The families of these classmates still live in Gah and are proud of their long association with Singh.
