There is news of relief for the people troubled by spam calls and unwanted messages. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has made new rules to stop it. Now customers will be able to register their complaint easily. If the telecom companies do not take action on the complaints lodged by the customers, then they will also be fined Rs 2-10 lakh.

TRAI has changed the rules of identification of commercial messages. Now ‘-P’ in front of promotional messages, ‘-S’ in front of service related messages, ‘-T’ in front of transactional messages and ‘-G’ in front of government messages will be written. So that customers can easily understand what kind of message has come.

How much can be fined

TRAI has ordered all telecom companies to identify spam calls in real time. For this, the pattern of calls and messages will have to be checked, such as repeated calls, very short time calls and incoming-outgoing call ratio. If a company does not give the correct information about spam call, then for the first time, a fine of Rs 2 lakh, Rs 5 lakh for the second time and repeated mistakes of up to Rs 10 lakh will be imposed.

How many days will you have to complain

The new rules will be applicable in 30-60 days. All telecom companies will have to give an easy option to file a complaint of spam call on their app or portal. Customers will also be able to complain through email. The first complaint deadline was 3 days, which has now been extended to 7 days.

Now customers will be able to file a complaint by giving only spam call number and uploading screenshots in the app. Telecom companies will have to take action against the spam calls within 5 days, whereas earlier this limit was 30 days. If 5 complaints are received against a number in 10 days, then it has to be blocked and put into blacklist. Customers who do not want commercial messages, no promotional company will be able to ask for consent before 90 days. Telecom companies will have to give the option to shut down in promotional messages, which was not yet available.
