Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge compared Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to Kittur Rani Chennamma and Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, figures who fought against the British. Saying that Priyanka Gandhi represents ‘woman power’. He also described Rahul Gandhi as a symbol of ‘youth power’. Congress President Kharge made the remarks during the Congress’ ‘Gandhi Bharat’ programme, which was organized to mark 100 years of the 1924 Congress session held under the chairmanship of Mahatma Gandhi in Belagavi.
He said, “If there is Chennamma of Kittur, it is Priyanka Gandhi. If there is Rani of Jhansi, it is Priyanka Gandhi. She is very strong. After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, it is she who took care of the family. We have women power (Priyanka Gandhi) In) and youth power is Rahul Gandhi.” He said, “Belagavi is the birthplace of Kittur Rani Chennamma. She was a great woman who fought for the honor of the country and for the people of the country. Similarly, if there is a powerful woman who fought against the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, If someone is there then she is Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. She has that courage.
Targeted at Amit Shah
Kharge said that both Rahul and Priyanka have earned a distinct reputation in the country, which is unique. He said, “We have woman power (Priyanka Gandhi) and we have youth power in the form of Rahul Gandhi. We are all with you.” In this program organized on the theme of ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Constitution’, Union Home Minister Amit Shah was targeted and he was recently criticized in the Rajya Sabha for the Indian Constitution and its creator B. He said that though Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah show respect for Gandhi, they actually worship Godse.
Allegation of playing games by alleging differences of opinion
The senior Congress leader also accused the BJP of “playing games” by alleging differences between Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Gandhi and Ambedkar. Refuting BJP’s claim that Congress had insulted Ambedkar by ensuring his defeat, Kharge showed the public a letter which he claimed was written by Ambedkar to his friend Kamal Kant, in which he had mentioned that Savarkar and S. A. Dange was responsible for their defeat.
Attack on BJP regarding Baba Saheb
Kharge said, “Today the BJP chants the name of Ambedkar and bows before the Constitution. What kind of drama is this? If there is anyone burning the statues of Constitution, Ambedkar and Nehru, it is BJP, RSS and Hindu Mahasabha.” The Congress chief said it was his party that had helped Ambedkar win the elections. He also alleged that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was “harassing” Dalits and backward communities in universities, while recruitments were being held for Dalits in the government sector.
“Searching for temples under mosques”
On the surveys of mosques being conducted in the country, Kharge said, “BJP and RSS are looking for temples under the mosques. Why are they doing this? They will have to repent, because this is dangerous for the unity of the country.” The Congress leader took a dig at Modi for his alleged statement that people came to know about Mahatma Gandhi after watching Richard Attenborough’s film “Gandhi”.
