41,400 dollars seized at Amritsar Airport: Passenger came from Dubai, RBI got more than range, second case in one month

The Regional Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Amritsar has busted another major case of foreign currency smuggling. On Friday, officials stopped a passenger from Dubai from the Air India Express flight at Amritsar International Airport on the basis of intelligence information. On his search, a foreign currency of US $ 41,400 (about Rs 35.40 lakh in Indian currency) was recovered from him. According to information received from DRI, preliminary investigation has revealed that the passenger had brought foreign currency to India with the intention of smuggling in his belongings. When the officials started a thorough search of his belongings on suspicion, the US dollars were specially hidden from it. More than the RBI limit, seizure under the Customs Act DRI stated that the seized foreign currency is higher than the valid limit set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). For this reason, it has been seized under Customs Act 1962. Initial interrogation has indicated that the accused person was smuggling for monetary benefits. The second case in a month is that this case is another major case of foreign exchange smuggling within a month. Earlier on 3 May, DRI caught another passenger with foreign currency of Rs 2.66 crore. It is clear from both cases that smuggling gangs are trying to bring foreign currency to India in an organized manner from abroad.
